Alan March’s Family History

JOHN MAPES and ANN SKRUBY (8)
JOHN MAPES. In adult life we find John in the Essed village of Beauchamp Roding, NW of Chelmsford. The most convincing baptism for him is the following.
Baptism. Holy Trinity, Pleshey.
1727 Aug 20 John son of George and Alice Mapes
Pleshey is 6 miles north of Beauchamp Roding.
There is no sign of this child dying young and the nearest wedding for him is the one in Beauchamp Roding.
No wedding has been found for George Mapes, so we don’t know his mother’s maiden name.
John was the eldest of three children, the second of whom died young.
John not only married in Beauchamp Roding, but brought up his family there. It is likely that he had already moved there from Pleshey before the wedding.
ANN SKRUBY. There are many Skruby/Scrubys in this area, but we have been unable to identify Ann’s baptism.
Weddings usually took place in the bride’s parish, so we assume that Ann was living there then.
Beauchamp Roding lies 8 miles west of the county town of Chelmsford. It is unusual in having no central village around the church. Most of the population lived in the hamlet of Bird’s Green. The church of St Botolph is now isolated and can only be reached along field track. An ancient sarsen stone in the graveyard may mark it as an earlier pagan sacred site.
There is heavy clay soil that grew mostly wheat, barley and beans.

One transcription has her surname as Tenby. There are many Skruby/Scrubys in Beauchamp Roding, but no Tenbys until the 20th century.

Baptism. Independent Church, Abbess Roding.
1761 Mar 23 John Mappess of Bolcham Roding had a son baptised named William.
“Bolcham Roding” is Beauchamp Roding.
Abbess Roding lies immediately to the north of Beauchamp Roding. In the 18th century it had one of the largest independent congregations in Essex.
We have not found burials for John or Ann. .
