Fay Sampson’s Family History

This site is a work-in-progress. There is a massive amount to cover. I have included both male and female lines, and some go back 30 generations. Keep coming back for more.
I have numbered the generations working backwards from my own as (1)

HENRYE MAYE and MARGARET BEANE (12)

HENRY MAYE. Henry married in Ringwould and brought up his family there, but he was not baptised in Ringwould. Nor has his baptism been found within a ten-mile radius.

His marriage in1604 is the first instance of the Maye surname in the Ringwould registers.

His son John became a fisherman and it is likely that this was Henry’s occupation too.

If so, then it is likely that he lived in the coastal hamlet of Kingsdown, which was part of Ringwould parish.

MARGARET BEANE. Unlike Henry, Margaret was from an established Ringwould family. She was baptised on 25 Mar 1579 in the church of St Nicholas, Ringwould. Her father was Thomas Beane. Her mother was Agnes Bedford.

Margaret was the youngest of four known children.

Henry and Margaret were children of the latter part of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign.

They were married in 1604, a year after James I had succeeded Elizabeth as the first Stuart monarch. Margaret was 25.

1617/8 Mar 22  Robert
1621 Apr 1  James

No burials have been found for any of these children. This suggests that the Maye family were reasonably well off.

Neither Henry nor Margaret lived to see the Civil War. They both died in the preceding decade, when shipping in the English Channel became increasingly threatened by the foreign wars of Charles I.

Henry was buried in May 1631

Margaret outlived him by nearly 7 years.
