Fay Sampson’s Family History
This site is a work-in-progress. There is a massive amount to cover. I have included both male and female lines, and some go back 30 generations. Keep coming back for more.
I have numbered the generations working backwards from my own as (1)
GILBERT BURTON and ISABELL DUNN (21)
GILBERT BURTON was born 1324. He is said in one family tree to be the son of Henry Burton and his wife Elsa Jessie. [1]
Only this one online family tree takes the Burton ancestry back beyond Gilbert. The source for this is not named. Jessie sounds an unlikely name for the 14th century.
ISABELL DUNN. We are on safer ground with Isabell. There is general agreement that she was the daughter of John Dunn and Eleanor Knovill, born in 1324.
Both are associated with the Halberton area, just east of Tiverton, but it was their daughter-in-law, Alice de Boys, who brought the manor of Halberton to the Burton family when she married their son Henry after their deaths.
The outstanding event of Gilbert and Isabell’s lives was the Black Death. It arrived in England in 1348 and killed close on half the population.
Soon afterwards, in 1350, Gilbert married Isabell.
They had two sons, Gilbert and Henry.
They did not have long to enjoy their married life. Isabell died in 1356 aged 32 and Gilbert the following year aged 33. It is possible that there was a local recurrence of the plague to take both of them off so early.
