Fay Sampson’s Family History

This site is a work-in-progress. There is a massive amount to cover. I have included both male and female lines, and some go back 30 generations. Keep coming back for more.
I have numbered the generations working backwards from my own as (1)

JOHN FROST and SARAH TOMLYN (7)

JOHN FROST. John and Sarah were married in Deal in 1767. This makes it likely that they would have been born around the 1730s or 40s. There is a baptism on 11 Feb 1738 in St Mary the Virgin, Sandwich, for John, son of Thomas and Mary Frost. Mary’s maiden name was Lamb.[1]

Sandwich is less than 5 miles from Deal. It was once a Cinque Port, but the harbour silted up, leaving the town now more than 2 miles from the sea.

John was the fourth of seven children, and the oldest son. But two of his siblings died before he was born and one after, leaving him the second of the four surviving children.
The high mortality rate might suggest a low-income family, but the first two to die were infant twins who may have been born prematurely. There is some evidence of poverty in earlier generations of his family.

By the time he was 28, John had moved to Deal, where he was resident at the time of his marriage.
We have no information about his occupation.

SARAH TOMLYN. Sarah came from a Deal family. She was baptised at St Leonard’s on 24 July 1748, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Tomlyn. We do not know her mother’s surname.
She was the third of seven children, two of whom died young.

She came from a seafaring family, which included master mariners.

There were not many Tomlyns in Deal. One of them was entered at her burial as “Mrs Tomlin”, and indication of gentry status. She may have been related to Sarah, but we do not know how closely.

John and Sarah were married at St Leonard’s Deal by banns on 16 Aug 1767. Both sign their names. Sarah’s surname is entered in the register as Tomlyn, but she signs herself Tomlin. Both were “of this parish”.
The witness were Will: Pett and Mary Lambert, both of whom sign their names.
At 19, Sarah was nearly 10 years younger than John.

The first three children were baptised in Deal.
Sarah 5 Jun 1769
Winnifred 28 Oct 1770
Stephen  6 Dec 1772

The family then moved to Dover, where another three children of John and Sarah Frost were baptised at St James. There is no evidence of another such couple marrying around this time.

John born 31 Dec 1774, bapt 15 Jan 1775
Robert  born Dec 23 1776, bapt 19 Jan 1777
Richard born 3 Aug 1779, bapt  22 Aug

They then made a final move to Charlton by Dover, where the two youngest children were baptised at SS Peter and Paul.

Ann 2 Dec 1780
Charles 3 Feb 1784

Charlton is a small parish on the northern edge of Dover.

John was buried at Charlton by Dover on 11 May 1793. He was 55.

Sarah’s burial has not been found. She was only 45 when John died and may have remarried. There are a number of marriages for Sarah Frost following John’s death, mostly in Deal or Walmer, but none which can definitely be linked to John’s widow.
