Fay Sampson’s Family History

This site is a work-in-progress. There is a massive amount to cover. I have included both male and female lines, and some go back 30 generations. Keep coming back for more.
I have numbered the generations working backwards from my own as (1)

HENRY PAINE and ANN (10)

HENRY PAINE. We find him raising a family in the Northamptonshire village of Great Brington from 1677. We should expect a birth date around 1650. This leads us to the following.

Baptism. St Mary the Virgin, Great Brington.
1647 Sep 19  Henery son of John and Elizabeth Payne.

We believe his mother to be Elizabeth Greene, of nearby Harlestone.

Henry was the fifth of six children. He grew up in the hamlet of Nobottle, in the parish of Great Brington. This lies halfway between the villages of Great Brington to the north and Harpole to the south, and is five miles west of the county town of Northampton.

He was born near the end of the Civil War. Northamptonshire was overwhelmingly for Parliament, but Henry would have been too young to appreciate what was happening.

He would have had more vivid memories of the Commonwealth period that followed it in the 1650s. This was a joyless time, when the Puritans banned festivals like Christmas and the playing of most games.

The major landowners were the Spencer family of Althorp. They would almost certainly have been the Paines’ landlords. The church of St Mary the Virgin at Great Brington holds many Spencer memorials.

Henry became a labourer.

We have evidence of his low income.
1674 Hearth Tax. Great Brington.
Henry Paine  1 hearth  Exempt.
He must have been too poor to pay the tax.

Around that time, he married Ann.

ANN. We have not found the wedding of Henry and Ann, so we do not know her maiden name.

We have the baptisms of five children.
Baptisms. St Mary the Virgin, Great Brington.
1677 Apr 29  Elizabeth
1678 Nov 3  Thomas
1681 Oct 3  Alixander
1683 Monay 13  Mary
1689/90 Feb 24  Ann

Ann died near the start of the 18th century.

Burial. St Mary the Virgin, Great Brington.
1703 Sep 25  Ann wife of Henry Paine labourer

She was probably in her 50s.

Henry lived for another 19 years. He died in 1722.

Burial. St Mary the Virgin, Great Brington
1722 Aug 23  Henry Pain of Nobottle.

He was nearly 75.
